AI Assistants Embedded in Engineering Tools to Tackle Industrial Complexity

Obeo and CEA are taking a new step in their strategic collaboration with the joint development of artificial intelligence assistants for augmented collaborative digital engineering. This announcement marks a new milestone in a partnership that began several years ago and has already led to major developments based on Obeo’s Eclipse Sirius technology for the open source Papyrus and SysON tools.

Tool adoption, distributed expertise, and the need for smoother collaboration across teams are key challenges for engineering organizations. Obeo and CEA-List are combining their expertise in augmented collaborative engineering, an approach that brings artificial intelligence and systems engineering together to rethink the user experience and enable project teams to collaborate and connect more effectively, particularly in demanding industries such as aerospace, defense, and transportation.

Trustworthy AI: Transparent, Confidential, and Resource-Efficient

Aware of the socioeconomic and environmental challenges raised by the development of artificial intelligence, Obeo and CEA-List are committed to designing high-performance, resource-efficient AI applications that meet regulatory requirements for transparency and confidentiality, in line with the needs of strategic industrial sectors. This initiative also contributes to strengthening French and European industrial competitiveness and sovereignty by fostering technology transfer between public research and the open source software ecosystem.

AI Assistants to Support Engineers in Their Daily Work

Combining Obeo’s product expertise with CEA-List’s research excellence, the two partners are jointly developing artificial intelligence assistants integrated into model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools. Initial developments focus on adaptive onboarding and coaching capabilities designed to make these tools easier to learn and use. These developments follow a rigorous methodological framework and will be evaluated through real-world use cases in aerospace, defense, and transportation.

A Long-Standing Industrial Partnership

This announcement builds on a collaboration initiated in 2023, bringing Obeo and CEA-List together around a shared ambition: to lay the open source foundations for future systems engineering platforms integrating the UML and SysML v2 standards. This collaboration has already contributed to modernizing the Papyrus environment through its migration to Sirius and to laying the foundations for SysON, an open source project hosted by the Eclipse Foundation. Building on this long-standing relationship, Obeo and CEA-List are now expanding their collaboration to artificial intelligence applied to model-based engineering.

To address the challenges of deploying MBSE, we are joining forces with Obeo to develop responsible and transparent AI embedded at the heart of systems engineering tools. Designed as an assistant tailored to engineers’ needs, this technology provides industry with a powerful way to manage system complexity, reduce risks, and transform engineering practices for the long term while accelerating time to market.

Alexandre Bounouh, Director of CEA-List

Together with CEA-List, we want to turn the potential of AI into practical capabilities, integrated into our solutions and useful to engineers in their daily work. Our ambition is to make AI a catalyst for MBSE adoption across industry, guided by a strong conviction: AI assists, engineers decide.

Cédric Brun, CEO of Obeo
